About Wes' QuickTime Illustration...
)1993, Wes Burian
August 1993
All the talk a couple of months back on comp.multimedia
inspired me to whip up an illustration pertaining to
QuickTime and video editing, and the whole thing. QuickTime
and video editing is still a hot topic, so I decided to post
this so that other people than I could stare at it on their
monitors.
It's provided as a 72 dpi teachtext PICT. The original file
is a 300 dpi Photoshop file, so if you want to have a look at
that, mail me. Or if you're in need of some other
illustration, contact me as well, I do them from time to
time. Or just mail me for the fun of it anyways, I like to
hear from other computer artists/designers.
This illustration is provided for your use however you want
to use it. At 72 dpi it's not horribly useful for anything
except looking at, but as long as no changes are made and you
don't make an exact replica of it yourself, feel free to do
whatever you want with it free of any legalities.

Subject: [*] Adder
Hello.
This is just a small utility designed to run under At Ease. It enables
a user to add to the At Ease desktop applications from a floppy.
It also enables the easy removal of all such added applications.
It was designed for use in a student mac laboratory here, so that
we could use At Ease with its advantages for easy maintenance and easy
use of the system (most students her have little mac experience), but
still allow them to use applications they had on a floppy without having
to install them on the hard disk, or get an administrator to set
up an alias.
This does undermine the security of At Ease a little, but it is not
meant to be a security application really anyway. I find the
advantages this utility adds outweigh the slight compromise
of security (which can be circumvented by a startup floppy anyway).

Subject: [*] BBEdit HTML extensions
Dear netters,
I've written a set of BBEdit extensions which can assist HTML
(HyperText Markup Language) documents edition. Our Web Gang'
(we have an experimental World Wide Web server: 'http://www.uji.es')
has used it, and it has proved to be useful for us.
Drag files to 'BBEdit extensions' folder in order to install
the extensions. Once installed, the usage is very simple:
select the text you want to be, say, a link to another document,
and then select the 'HTML link' in the 'Extensions' menu.
Included extensions are:
- Title
- Heading
- Paragraph
- Comment
- Anchor
- Link
- Format (numbered, unnumbered and descriptive lists,
extended quotes, preformatted text, listings, menus and
directories)
- Style (bold, italics, underline, emphasis,
strong emphasis, citation and address)
- Typewriter font
- Image
- Specials translation (translation of special
mac characters into HTML sequences)
I hope this can be useful to other people over the net.
Please, send me any comments, suggestions or bug reports.
(The package may be included in the CD-ROM of the archives.)

Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.0
ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select
the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly
created file. You will be also asked for the name of the
application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it
to the user if the application is not present.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Subject: [*] ctc v1.5 (ChangeTypeCreator + change EOLs, too!)
ChangeTypeCreator.c
Change the file type and creator of any file dropped onto
this program. Prompts for the file type and creator, and
changes all files dropped at the same time to the same type
and creator.
Written by Brian Bechtel, based on code by Juri Munkki
Feel free to use the code in your programs.
Modified by Pete R. Jemian, Late-Nite(tm) Software
Option was added to convert TEXT files to the
chosen system of EOL (end-of-line) characters. Note that EOLs
on DOS files are <CR><LF> (VAX also uses this EOL format)
on Mac files are <CR>
on UNIX files are <LF>
If you aren't bothered by this, that's just great. If you
are, this little hack will surely help. Very useful for
moving TEXT files between DOS, Mac, and UNIX machines
by diskNet (copy file onto disk, remove disk, sneaker it
to other machine, ...).
BTW: Set the application's size to that of the largest file
that you expect to convert EOLs. The EOLconvert code
reads the entire file into memory at one time, then does
the conversion as the file is re-written.
WARNING:
If you don't know what you are doing, things *could* get
pretty fouled up. They might not. UNDO is not supported.
See the source code to determine *exactly* what is done.
The problem that *could* occur is that you mistakenly select
a non-TEXT file along with other TEXT files and convert them
all to type TEXT *and* convert the EOL characters to the
selection of your choice. That's the danger. Don't do it.
You are unprotected against goofball errors like this.

Subject: [*] DarkShutdown 2.0
DarkShutdown is a Darkside 4.1 module which will restart/shut down your
Mac besides darkening the screens after the given time has elapsed.
The Finder or At Ease must be running, because I restart/shut down
by telling them to do it (with Apple Events), so that all open
applications are closed correctly.
There is even an option for responding automatically to the
"Do you want to save..." dialog boxes, useful if the Mac is unattended.
It is fully integrated with Alessandro Levi Montalcini's
Shutdown Delay 2.0.1.
Version 2.0 lets you restart/shut down:
- at a specified time;
- once a specified period of time has elapsed after the Mac starts up;
- once a specified period of time has elapsed after the screen saver engages.
DarkShutdown fades the screen and shows the countdown.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

Subject: [*] LeeMail 2.0.1
Here is LeeMail 2.0.1, an minor upgrade from 2.0. LeeMail is a shareware
Macintosh e-mail program that can use both the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
(SMTP) and the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) to send and receive
mail.
LeeMail requires MacTCP (or "TCP Connection for Macintosh"), available from
Apple.
Changes between version 2.0 and 2.0.1 include:
. LM 2.0 now runs under System 6. This problem was due to a small,
embarassing coding error. :-) Thanks to Guy Brand!
. The RFromS popup in the Send dialog now reflects the sender when the
RToS
button is clicked while composing mail.
. Command-clicking list items in mail windows now acts exactly like
shift-clicking.
. Autoquoting does a much better job at wrapping text, particularly if
the
sender didnUt put returns at the end of each line.
. LeeMail will now accept mail from mailers that use bare linefeeds
instead
of carriage return-linefeed pairs.
. Filing mail to a folder alias works correctly now.
. Deleting an alias now selects the first remaining alias.
. The timeout period was increased to allow for slow networks.
. All strings (or almost all) were placed in resources for ease of
translation. More thanks to Guy Brand!
. POP error reporting is now done through the status window to
facilitate
unattended operation.
LeeMail is shareware, $25. Group packages, site licenses and source code
licenses are available.
For those of you who have paid your shareware fees, thanks very much! The
upgrade from 1.x to 2.0.x is free! To those of you who haven't paid, you
waited too long -- the price went up! :-)

Subject: [*] Network Time 2.0.1
This is Network Time, version 2.0.1, a minor bug fix release for
Network Time 2.0. Please replace any earlier versions of Network Time
you may have with this.
Network Time is a control panel program that sets the clock on your
Macintosh computer to the correct time of day. To do this, Network Time
contacts a time server using the Apple MacTCP network software to get
the correct time of day. Network Time automatically adjusts your clock
taking into consideration the time zone and the daylight savings time
rules that you configure using the Network Time control panel.
Network Time requires at least a Macintosh Plus computer running system
software version 6.0.5 or later (including System 7) and requires
MacTCP version 1.1 or later. Network Time has full Balloon Help
support. Foreign language versions of Network Time are available
separately; the versions that are now either avaiable or in progress
are Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and
Swedish.
This package contains a QuickStart manual with basic instructions in
TeachText format and the full Network Time manual is provided in
MacWrite Pro format. The manual is also available in PostScript format
in a separate archive, and a printed copy of the manual can be obtained

Subject: [*] replaces the-news and the-news-uucp
And now, TheNews ...
This is the latest release of TheNews, a net news reader for
the Macintosh. TheNews V2.3 gives you access to the various
and sundry news groups available on Usenet, directly from
your Macintosh. With this access, you can:
* read news articles
* post new and followup news articles
* send mail directly to the author of news articles
TheNews understands how to communicate with news and mail
servers directly via MacTCP. This new release also understands
how to read news articles directly off of your hard (in
conjunction with UUPC and ToadNews), and by popular demand,
this release can also talk over a plain old modem via the
Communications ToolBox.
In addition, this release adds the following features
* dynamic sorting of the contents of the article list window
* dynamic threading/unthreading of contents of the article
list window
* an option to "open with refresh" whenever you start TheNews
* a "read next unread" command (available from either the
article list window or the article text window)
* the abilility to save (or append) one or more articles (or
an entire thread or several threads) directly to your
disk
* a menu bar entry for each active window (which allows you
to bring any active window into the foreground)
In the spirit of "shared sacrifice", this program retains its
original low, low shareware price of $25 US, with even lower prices
when you buy a boatload of copies of the program. Send your
comments, checks, and money orders to

AOL: LeslieJonz
This is version 1.4 of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for ZTerm 0.9.
The FAQ includes answers to common questions, undocumented tips, bug
reports, ResEdit hacks, and information about the next version of ZTerm.
The questions and answers cover every aspect of ZTerm operation.
Before sending a question about ZTerm to America Online, Usenet, or ZTerm
author Dave Alverson, you should read this FAQ. This will save everyone's
time. Also, you will probably find information in the FAQ that you never
knew existed.
=========================
Changes in version 1.4:
=========================
o Update on the ZTerm and the AV Macs
o Update on CTB ZModem tools
o Warning about using \J1 with 14400 bps modems
o Details of multiple phonebooks (ZPhoneLists)
o More detailed explanation of MacBinary
o Information about DTR, dropped carrier, and hangup problems
o Other updates
This is the most extensive rewrite to date. I've added a great deal
of information, and rewritten and reorganized several sections. My
motivation is that this version will be published on the Nautilus
CD-ROM, so I want it to be perfect, or nearly so.

Believe it or not, Murphy's law didn't hold here. It actually is a 14.4k
modem, as in, that is the carrier speed. It uses v32.bis, which defines the
14.4k protocol, plus it has v42 error correction and v42.bis compression on
top of that. And if that weren't enough, it has fax capabilities built-in...
all I need is s/w. I have connected at 9600 and at 14,400 and have only had a
few snags, mostly just relating to setup and the host modem.
I won't lie and say it doesn't have a quirk here and there, but I have never
had a modem that didn't have an occacsional oddity, mostly related to setup,
the host modem, etc.
When I call my favorite local BBS, I connect at 14,400 bps with error
correction enabled! Now the "weak link" in my setup is not the modem, but the
emulation software, ZTerm. While ZTerm is probably the best shareware modem
s/w out there, it has the same problem the commercial packages seem to have;
it is a little slow in emulating ANSI color/graphics, so my data gets to my
emulator's data buffer, and then a second or two later, it draws it on the
screen. It's entirely possible my IIcx processor is just pokey.
And, by the way, I quickly realized that only having an IO light (instead of
TXD and RXD) is not as bad as I thought. As long as it's blinking, I'm
happy. I can figure out which way the data is going.
That's all for now!

Subject: 7.1 vs 7.1P OS and Hardware Update 2.0
My Mac SE finally reached its limit, so I moved up to a 68030 Mac
last week (welcome to the modern computer age). Although I
started out looking for a Mac LC III, their prices have not
dropped since the spring due their popularity. However, I could
get a discontinued Mac IIvx/Performa 600 and almost a Centris 610
for the same price. Performa 600 won out on price, figuring
what's the difference of a letter "P" in an operating system?
That is the $64,000 question. Noticing that the Hardware Update
was only version 1.0, I went to ftp.apple.com to get version 2.0,
but found in the documentation that it is "not intended for
Performa's." Woah. Why not? My understanding is that the
hardware of Performas and true Macs are identical, except for an
optional math coprocessor or cache here or there. Should I
really not update the Hardware Update system extension?
More fundamentally, should I scrap 7.1P altogether, and buy and
install a true blue (oops, IBM reference unintended) version 7.1?
Also, I have four System Enablers installed. How do I find out
what they do? All are numbered >300 and have no counterpart on
ftp.apple.com where the latest enablers reside.
TIA for any advice.

Adam, the Alias manager uses several different references for resolving
aliases. I think it trys filename first, but then uses (I think- don't
quote me on this) path and some internal file number-record. It is possible
to fool it sometimes, but you aren't 'supposed' to be able to do this. A
tool like Alias Zoo or the like can attach an alias to any other file-
reseting the alias to point to another file. This would probably be the
best way to replace an aliased extension, short of tossing aliases and
making new ones. I think it (alias zoo) has a search for orphaned aliases
function (haven't seen it in a while), which could help with this some.
Hope this helps.

Subject: A little from some FutureBasic gurus...
Folks,
I need some assistance in resurrecting some syntax from my
thick-skull.
I haven't worked with BASIC in years and am having problems with the
following while using FutureBasic:
IF VAL (TIME$) > 19:05:00 THEN BEEP
^^^^^^
\
\
This portion is not correct and will give
a syntax error message.
This is correct but not what I want:
IF VAL (TIME$) > 19 THEN BEEP
If someone can get back to me on this, I sure would appreciate it.
I need the ability to check hours:minutes:seconds and produce a beep if a
certain conditional is met. I can only get VAL, using the syntax I've
given, to recognize the first number (the hour), as it should. Somehow, I
need to pull in the minutes and seconds.
I have a feeling I'm going to feel awfully foolish when I see the
solution.
Many thanks!!!

It turns out that:

is the one to use. Gosh, how QUICKLY I have forgotten BASIC.

Subject: Another set of bulk replies :-)
* OK, sounds cool, but when I go to update a version of an extension,
say Disinfectant init, from 2.9 to 3.2, how do I get all the aliases on
those Macs to reference the new version as their "original" item? *
The trick is: make sure the old application and the new one have EXACTLY
the same name. Copy the new application into the folder with the old
one (and give an affirmative response to the "do you want to replace"
dialog). You'll find that the old alias will now recognize the new
(replaced) version (I've been doing this with updates to TrashMan and
StuffIT Expander for several versions on several Macs)
* I've used Fetch a little, and like it. I've never used TurboGopher.
What's the difference between the two? Are they functionally the same?
*
You can use both to retrieve software from many of the same archives
(sumex, umich, wustl), but the two programs are quite different. Once
Fetch connects to another host, it holds the connection until you
disconnect (that's why it's nearly impossible to connect to sumex or
umich during the daytime--the few available connections are almost
always being used by someone else). TurboGopher is client software that
connects to a Gopher server (at Minnesota by default, but it can
"trained" to connect to a local one if there's one at or near your
host). Gopher servers connect to each other, or to hosts that support
Gopher access (sumex and umich both do, ftp.apple.com does NOT) ONLY
when they need to send or receive data. Hence many more people can
share the same number of ports using Gopher. At a busy host like sumex,
Gopher will return "server busy" quite often during the day but connect
successfully a minute or two later (persistence pays with Gopher much
more often than with Fetch).
* > So, the obvious questions is: is anyone out there in net-land
sending binhex files from home via GEnie and if so, how are you doing
it?
Use any program to search for a return and replace with a return and a
specific character that you agree on, such as M. *
What happens if your dad, on Genie, invokes the "add linefeeds"
provision in most binhex encoders (makes CR/LF instead of just CR)?
Will Genie start the lines with LF instead of '*' (or just double space
the hqx file, which wouldn't help)? Most binhex decoders won't have
difficulty dealing with lines starting with LF, and there are lots of
ways to strip the LF's if you need to. If you can use LF's that should
minimize the hassle.
* In the meantime, does anyone recommend a shareware desktop pattern CP?
*
I'm partial to DeskTop Textures myself.
get /info-mac/UTIL/desktop-textures-21.hqx
That program also should be able to restore you System to the default so
you can use the General CP if you wish to.
* does anybody know a mail-program for the macintosh called Pegasus?
Somebody told me that it is a shareware-programm. Maybe there is even a
ftp-site where I can get it... *
Pegasus Mail version 2.0.2 for the Macintosh available from risc.ua.edu
(130.160.4.7), as /pub/network/pegasus/pmmac202.hqx
It should also be available from the following sites:
omnigate.clarkson.edu
If you get that CLIENT, you'll still need a Pegasus Mailer, on a Novell
server (does Pegasus Mail run on anything else) in order to use it?
There also are Pegasus clients for WinDoze and, I believe, MeSsy DOS.
* They claim to be sit files, but even the latest version of >unstuffit<
refuses to recognize the format. *
UnStuffIT was superseded by StuffIT Expander about two years ago (my
memory for time sometimes is inexact). The .sit files you're
downloading are StuffIT Deluxe 3 format that has been the standard for
the past two years. get /info-mac/cmp/stuffit-expander-303.hqx and
you'll be able to unpack .cpt as well as all .sit archives.

Subject: A request for your consideration...
Starting on Sunday, October 17th, 1993, I will be hosting a new radio show on
personal computing called Online Tonight. It will be syndicated
internationally
and will be delivered via the ABC Satellite Network. It will be *very*
different from other computer shows...and I hope that you all will join in.
Here's my request: please let me know of any computer oriented charities that
would benefit from having their missions publicized.
Here's why: during the course of the show, there will be numerous commercial
breaks. Each of these breaks is approximately 3 minutes long. In each break
there will be 1-2 minutes of national commercials (commercials *we* have sold
and air from the network origination point), followed immediately by a minute
of *local* commercial time. Now, if the local station does not sell a
particular slot, we can't very well have 60 seconds of dead air, so what we
(and every other network show) do is air a public service announcement (that
would otherwise be covered up by the local station's commercial if sold).
What I'd like to do is not only play PSA's in those slots by the American Red
Cross, the American Cancer Society, etc. but also make sure that if there are
any worthwhile *computer-oriented* causes out there that they get the
exposure,
too.
For example, I've heard of a foundation that takes old computers and
refurbishes them using ***-challenged people for labor and then donates them
to
schools. I've also heard of SeniorNet, a non-profit organization that is
trying
to get senior citizens to be more computer literate.
If you know of any other organizations, hopefully that already have produced
30
or 60 second radio PSA's, that you either E-mail me at OLTDavid on America
Online, or post the info here. We won't be accepting copy for live reads, just
tapes. Format is 7.5 or 15 IPS 1/4 inch reel tape or CD.
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you.

- does there is a technical documentation were a could find infos

Subject: Conversion of Mac to UNIX text files...
I have a need for something which will convert Mac text files to UNIX text
files (basically changing how the ends of lines are represented...) I realize
that many text editors, like BBEdit and Alpha, will do this for me, but then
I'd have to do one file at a time (unless there's something about these
programs that I don't know.)
So my question: Is there a utilty, or a part of some other program, which will
quickly and easily convert a group of files from Mac text to UNIX text? It
can be either a Mac or UNIX program, although something on the Mac side would
be nicer.
And yes, if no such thing exists, I'll just write it myself. But I thought
I'd check and make sure I wasn't reinventing the wheel.

Paul Rauschelbach got there first (IM 11 #192), but can I confirm what he
said - the current version of Aldus FreeHand (3.11) cannot edit its own EPS
files.
I've had a few replies and talked to a few people since my original posting
about this. It appears that both native FreeHand files and FreeHand EPS
files are stored as binary EPS files (though native FreeHand files are
amended in some way). As far as I am aware, there is no utility available
to convert binary EPS files into text EPS (eg readable in Adobe
Illustrator) or native FreeHand files. However Altsys' EPS Exchange must do
this sort of conversion when converting native FreeHand files into
Illustrator format. Also Adobe seem to be releasing more PostScript code,
so the likelyhood is that the binary EPS format will be common knowledge,
and hence a conversion utility more likely.
Paul also mentions that Transverter Pro "will create editable Illustrator
files from EPS format files". Macworld (USA) Sept '93, p44 says
"[Transverter Pro] translates PostScript graphics into bitmapped files ....
and adds EPS previews to standard PostScript files".
I would be grateful if anyone could let me know if Transverter Pro will
indeed create Illustrator files from EPS format files, and also any details
of DeltaPoint's Graphics Utilities, which is supposed to convert graphics
files formats amongst other things.
Many thanks for evryone who has helped so far!
Most of the above is based on gossip, hearsay and rumour - as I'm already
going to get flamed on another posting, please feel free to let rip on all
my mistakes - I'm sort of ready.

Canvas won't do (a), and neither Canvas nor Word will do (b). Do

I know that Global Villages Teleport modems have such a kind of

Subject: How to format a Rodime Harddisk ?
In the past I always recommended Silverlining (from LaCie) when I was
asked for an universal HD formatter.
It appears, however, that even Silverlining has come to it's limit with
the disk I wanted to initialize yesterday. The label on the disk says that
it is a Rodime RO 5180ST, and should hold about 140 mB of data. It's one
of these early 5 1/4 inch drives. The sticker on the IC5 chip says
"Program (c) Rodime Inc. 1988 PGM 22130-7"
I installed the drive in an external case (which I know is working
perfectly with the tape device which is usually in it) and tried my luck.
I heard the disk spinning, but Silverlining refused to do anything with
it. When I opened Silverlining and selected the drive, a message was
displayed that I should check cables/termination/Id, etc. After selecting
"short test" it said that the test was okay, but I could not start the
long test, and the "Format" command resulted in an error.
After that, I was able to select the disk from the menu to see the
partition, but none of them had any size, and the message displayed on the
bottom of the window said: "Maximum available space: -17". Now what's
this, a negative value for the disk size ??? I could not change the size -
neither make it positive nor type any other negative value!
After that, I tried "HDT Primer" from FWB, but the results were about the
same - only that it did not display a negative value for the size, it
simply said that the drive was not ready and I should rescan the SCSI bus
(which I did more than once).
A utility program - I think it was called SCSI Info, I found it on a BMUG
shareware disk - displayed some info about the drive, and at the bottom
the message "no media" - just like a removable disk with no cartridge
inserted or a tape drive.
Maybe I should say that I did all this with a Centris 650 computer, but
the drive will be used (if it works some day) with a Mac Plus. But since
I don't own a Plus, I can't try it with one.
All suggestions are welcome. Best regards, Christian.

X-rays will NOT affect the data on your disks. Period. Whether or not
prolonged, and/or repeated exposure of floppies to x-rays will affect the
materials these thingies are made of I don't know for sure, but my guess is
that you need a LOT of radiation to destroy them...
DON'T (and I repeat DON'T) carry floppies on you, as the magnetic fields
generated by the metal-detector arches you'll have to walk through WILL affect
the data on your floppies. My advice -- from experience both ways :-( -- is,
just put your floppies in the same bag as your PowerBook and let them be
x-rayed.

Some time ago I gave my two cents about the sumex directory structure. The
structure is great except for one small item: Why is there no directory for
control panels? It just occured to me that this is why SuperClock and a few
other system extensions are in the Applications directory; apparently the
archivers couldn't classify it as GUI or anything else there is a directory
for.

I am interested to use commands for the old Macintalk v2.8 using

do the same with the new one. Is there a system file available or how

Might I suggest the setting up of a /.netrc file ? For example, I've an

This (somewhat unknown) feature of the Unix ftp command will get you in

Ditto for that. Or why not dedicate one specific digest (say, the last one

announcements for all the files added in the previous week ?

In the August MacWorld I saw an announcement about Passport Producer V2.0,

Could someone tell me if there is an upgrade program from V1.0 to V2.0 ?

There is a POP2 server that works with POPmail - I think it's called
MailStop and should be available on the nets at U of Minnesota and
other places. However, there is no POP3 server that I know of that
runs on the Mac, and Eudora and most other POP mail clients require
POP3.

Subject: Powering on your Mac remotely
I know there is software to power off your Mac remotely, but is there
hardware or software that allows you to power it on remotely? The two
applications would be for people dialing into our network (via Netblazers
using ARA) to be able to turn on their office computer from home, and also
for computer center staff to power on Macs in another building in order to
install software over the network. (By the way, we have been using
NetDistributor for installing software over the network, and recommend it
highly.) I think there is a device that allows you to power on your Mac if
you are dialing in to it directly with ARA and a modem attached to the Mac,
but this is not useful for us since people would be dialing into the
network via a central pool of modems attached to the Netblazer. If remote
power-on via the network is available only for Macs that can be powered on
via the keyboard (e.g., the IIsi), that would be helpful, though not ideal.
Reply to me and I will summarize if anything interesting comes up.

Subject: Reviving Deskwriter Cartridges
I have found the following works;
Black cartridges are readily unclogged using warm water.
colour cartridges can be unblocked using dry cleaning fluid
(actually I used tetrachloroethylene, but as a chemist, I have access to
stuff like this)
If not all the jets are cleared, play steam from an electric kettle over the
nozzles for a few minutes.
If that does not work, apply some dry cleaning fluid, and THEN steam
clean the cartridge.
Finally, if you have access to an ultrasound sonnicator, that will also
unblock all the nozzles.
Thus far however, the cartridges that come with the HP 1200C have
defeated me. They use an ink that does not apparently dissolve in
dry cleaning fluid! Does anyone have any info on a) how to unblock
these cartridges (they clock far more frequently than 550 ones)
and b) whether HP have finally made a totally unfillable cartridge?

>CYCO@MUSICA.MCGILL.CA
The most likely explanation is that you have "fast saves" permitted
under the preferences on your SE/30, and you don't have them set
this way on your IIci. It's normal to get a bit of difference too,
if the disks are different in size. (minimum space for a file is
different for different formatted sizes--see recent digests about
for more info on this. THis should not explain a difference of
15k though.)
The fast save option of Word can add much more than this to the
file size. I've seen documents grow to 3 or 4 times their normal
size with this option turned on. There's much more info on this
topic in past digests and in the manual as well, if you're still
curious. ;-)

Subject: SAME document, DIFFERENT size [C]
Files can have different sizes on different machines depending on the size
of the volume on which they reside. This has to do with the allocation
block size, which is the smallest size any one file can be (that is, even
if a file is 1-byte long, it will be stored in a file that is the
allocation block size). For example, on my 650Mb hard disk, the allocation
block size is 11K, so all my files are a multible of 11K in size. The
larger the hard disk partition, the larger the allocation block size
(e.g., my 240Mb hard disk has an 8K allocation size. So, this might
account for some of your differences in file sizes on 2 different machines.
WORD files can also differ in size, depending upon whether Fast Save is
enabled or not. When Fast Save is enabled, it saves files more quickly,
but at the expense of leaving obsolete data hanging around in the file
(which makes it larger). With Fast Save off, the file is completely
rewritten back to disk, meaning that obsolete data is purged, and the file
will be smaller. If you have Fast Save on in Word on Machine A, take a
file from it to Machine B (where Fast Save is off) and resave it, it will
possibly be smaller, even though its contents are identical to the file on
Machine A. (BTW, Fast Save is EVIL and should always be turned off, in my
experience.)

That's fine, we changed them all to spaces, so they are still shoved to the

Well, I finally did it. After 9.5 years using a B&W 68000

prices for discontinued Performa 600/Mac IIvx's, I bought the
former for less than the price of a Mac LC III (my original

While testing my software for compatibility this weekend, I
discovered that system 6 will not run on my new Performa 600.
Unfortunately, at least one frequently used program is not system
7 compatible. Previously, I simply switched to system 6 whenever
I needed to use this one program. But now the new machine won't
let me boot from system 6.0.7. Is there any way around this
restriction for downward compatibility (without paying for a
software upgrade--I'm otherwise happy w/ the program).
TIA for any tips.

wondered whether it was as simple as replacing the clock chip. Has anyone
tried yet (I don't want to be the first!)? Is it reasonbly safe for

replacement working only with a standard pencil-type soldering iron, or is
this strictly a job for the shop?
